{"id":7854,"date":"2023-07-24T10:33:34","date_gmt":"2023-07-24T16:33:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zters.com\/blog\/?p=7854"},"modified":"2023-07-24T10:33:34","modified_gmt":"2023-07-24T16:33:34","slug":"osha-proposes-rule-to-revise-current-osha-ppe-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zters.com\/blog\/osha-proposes-rule-to-revise-current-osha-ppe-standards","title":{"rendered":"OSHA Proposes Rule to Revise Current OSHA PPE Standards"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On July 19, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) published a national news release announcing a proposal to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.assp.org\/news-and-articles\/osha-proposes-rule-to-clarify-ppe-standard-for-construction-industry\">revise the current OSHA PPE standards<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/safetyculture.com\/topics\/ppe-safety\/\">Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)<\/a> minimizes employee exposure to hazards in the workplace and includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hard hats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gloves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Goggles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety shoes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety glasses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Welding helmets and goggles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hearing protection devices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Respirators<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coveralls<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vests<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And full body suits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>An excerpt from the release provides context for the revision:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>The current standard does not state clearly that PPE must fit each affected employee properly, which the Occupational Safety and Health Administration&#8217;s general industry and maritime standards do. The proposed change would clarify that PPE must fit each employee properly to protect them from occupational hazards.<\/em><\/p>\n<cite>OSHA National News Release (July 19, 2023)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The public is invited to submit comments and hearing requests before September 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-revised-osha-ppe-standards-will-affect-the-industry\">How Revised OSHA PPE Standards Will Affect the Industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>OSHA does not expect the change will increase employers&#8217; costs or compliance burdens since the proposed rule clarifies the existing OSHA PPE requirements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the proposal is approved, the language used to define PPE standards for construction will more closely align with standards for general industry and maritime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many consider this proposed revision a win for physically smaller construction workers, especially women, who have <a href=\"https:\/\/safety.blr.com\/workplace-safety-news\/construction-safety\/construction-safety\/OSHA-focuses-on-female-construction-workers\/\">expressed their concerns<\/a> in finding well-fitting PPE.
