The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.gov\/resources\/disability-rights-guide\/\">Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)<\/a> sets forth guidelines to ensure that events are accessible to everyone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help aid understanding on how to implement these guidelines, we\u2019re sharing some key insights and takeaways from the <a href=\"https:\/\/adata.org\/guide\/planning-guide-making-temporary-events-accessible-people-disabilities\">ADA Planning Guide for Making Temporary Events Accessible to People with Disabilities<\/a>. Our aim is to help organizers create events that are inclusive and welcoming to everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-understanding-ada-event-regulations\">Understanding ADA Event Regulations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The ADA guide emphasizes that temporary events \u2014 such as conferences, fairs, or festivals \u2014 should be designed with accessibility in mind <strong>from the outset<\/strong>. This means addressing various aspects of the event, including physical accessibility, communication, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.gopassage.com\/ada-compliance-key-aspects-to-know-for-events#:~:text=Venue%20Accessibility&amp;text=Ensure%20that%20the%20venue%20has,at%20least%2032%20inches%20wide.\">accommodations for different disabilities.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what <a href=\"https:\/\/adata.org\/guide\/planning-guide-making-temporary-events-accessible-people-disabilities#TOILET%20FACILITIES:~:text=Table%20of%20Contents-,CHAPTER%20Two%20%E2%80%93%20Planning,-People%20with%20disabilities\">the Guide<\/a> has to say about planning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>At a temporary event participants with disabilities must be able to:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Obtain information and directions prior to the event.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Arrive at the site in the same ways as others can (e.g. via private automobile, taxi, public transportation, event shuttles).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Find and use accessible parking.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Get from accessible parking to entrances.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Obtain additional information and directions on site.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Move around the site as needed.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Attend performances, participate in activities, and enter exhibits.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Experience and enjoy activities, even if the participant\u2019s disability affects their ability to communicate.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Select and purchase items at concessions.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Use public toilet rooms, telephones, water fountains, shelters, first aid stations, and other common amenities.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-physical-accessibility\">Physical Accessibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Entrances and Exits:<\/strong> Ensure that entrances and exits are wheelchair accessible, providing ramps or lifts when necessary. Event organizers should have clear signage directing wheelchair users and others with mobility challenges to nearby accessible entrances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Path of Travel:<\/strong> Maintain clear, wide pathways to accommodate individuals using mobility devices. People with disabilities should be able to use the same paths as able-bodied people whenever possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Parking:<\/strong> Designate <a href=\"https:\/\/adata.org\/guide\/planning-guide-making-temporary-events-accessible-people-disabilities#TOILET%20FACILITIES:~:text=General%3A%20Accessible%20parking,recommended.%20(Figure%206).\">accessible parking spaces<\/a> as close to the accessible entrance as possible and ensure proper signage. If event parking is off-site, you may want to consider creating a makeshift on-site parking option. It\u2019s also worth noting that parking spaces once considered accessible before passage of the ADA may not be adequate today.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Seating:<\/strong> Provide wheelchair-accessible seating options with a clear line of sight to the event. Standards require that<a href=\"https:\/\/adata.org\/guide\/planning-guide-making-temporary-events-accessible-people-disabilities#TOILET%20FACILITIES:~:text=Standards%20require%20that%205%25%2C%20but%20never%20less%20than%20one%20of%20all%20fixed%20or%20built%2Din%20tables%20and%20seating%2C%20be%20accessible%2C%20with%20adequate%20knee%20space%20and%20at%20appropriate%20heights%20for%20people%20using%20wheelchairs%20or%20needing%20to%20sit.\"> 5% (but never less than one) of all fixed or built-in tables<\/a> and seating, be accessible. There should be adequate knee space and the table should be at an appropriate height for people using wheelchairs to sit comfortably.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-communication\">Communication<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Information Accessibility: <\/strong>Make <a href=\"https:\/\/adata.org\/guide\/planning-guide-making-temporary-events-accessible-people-disabilities#TOILET%20FACILITIES:~:text=a%20specific%20activity.-,Communication%20Access,-People%20who%20are\">event information available in accessible formats<\/a>, such as Braille, large print, or electronic formats compatible with screen readers. Social media can be a great tool for getting the word out. Ensure that any images have descriptive text and any videos have closed captioning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Signage:<\/strong> Use clear and visible signage with easy-to-read fonts and high color contrast.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Announcements:<\/strong> Provide real-time captioning or sign language interpreters for important announcements.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-accommodations\">Accommodations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Service Animals:<\/strong> Allow individuals with disabilities to bring their service animals to the event.
