Top 5 blog posts of 2020

As we leave 2020 behind, let’s take a look at the top blog posts of the year. From planning outdoor weddings to implementing the latest dumpster camera technology, here are the articles people visited most this year.

How many toilets does it take?

The most-visited blog post in 2020 was our run-down on OSHA Rules for Construction Portable Toilets. It may or may not have been related to an increased need for handwashing stations this year, but we definitely saw more portable toilet and handwashing station rentals in 2020. Back in the spring, there was a waiting list for handwashing stations, which led to some creative trailer conversions. There are plenty in stock now, so give us a call if you need additional portable toilets and handwashing stations in 2021.

Keep an eye on your waste costs.

Next up was our post: New dumpster camera technology for better waste management. Our commercial waste team implemented Compology camera tech in our dumpsters this year, which led to more efficient service schedules. To learn more about how our camera tech helped customers right-size their waste during COVID-19, check out Dan Studer’s article in FMJ magazine.

Create a memorable outdoor wedding.

For the second year running, our article on planning an outdoor wedding was in the top five. With many people converting their indoor wedding to an outdoor one this year, it’s no surprise our article on portable toilets for outdoor weddings continues to get a lot of page views. We also featured outdoor wedding planning in a recent Ask Angela post.

How do you clean up after a storm or disaster?

This year had no shortage of fires, hurricanes, and events that required massive clean-up efforts. The most-viewed blog post from our resident waste expert was Ask Angela: How to clean up after a storm, fire or disaster. Many people don’t know where or how to dispose of storm or fire debris, and sometimes local rules can be confusing. We helped a lot of people coordinate cleanup efforts nationwide in 2020. This post features Angela’s top advice for anyone facing a reconstruction project.

Don’t get stuck with hidden fees.

Rounding out the top five is Top 10 dumpster hidden rental fees. One of our core missions is to provide fair, transparent pricing to our customers. This is because we know hidden rental fees can eat into a project’s budget and create unwanted surprises when an invoice arrives. In this post, we uncover the most common hidden fees and how to avoid them. When you’re ready to bundle your site services into one package with transparent pricing, give us a call. We’ve been helping people streamline their service rentals for more than ten years.

A 2020 Fireside Chat

2020 was remarkable, not only for the obvious reasons, but also from a business standpoint. We surpassed 100 employees, our new headquarters opened (although we’re still waiting to bring everyone back), and we adapted to meet the challenges and changes we all faced. To close out the year, join Chad, our president of marketing development, for a little much-needed humor in this 2020 fireside chat.

ZTERS Appoints Shelby Lowe to Run Houston Expansion

Lowe will oversee expansion of local worksite service rentals.

HOUSTON, November 30, 2020 – Longtime waste industry veteran Shelby Lowe has been tapped to helm a locally focused expansion of ZTERS. As President, Lowe will manage site service rentals in the Greater Houston area. He brings decades of Fortune 500 executive experience to the role.

“Shelby has a long track record of success in this industry, and we’re grateful to have his experience and leadership as the company grows,” said ZTERS CEO Jon Farley.

Lowe launched and owned a highly successful solid waste residential and commercial collection company that was purchased by Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI), a Fortune 500 company.

Lowe has held executive leadership roles with Fortune 500 companies Allied Waste Industries and BFI, and a nationally recognized bio-solids company. He went on to serve as a Regional Vice President for Allied Waste where he managed annual revenues of more than $950 million

In these roles, has managed the growth of multimillion-dollar divisions and has been instrumental in building successful sales teams. Lowe has also been involved in major acquisitions deals within the industry.

“Taking companies to the next-level in terms of capacity and service is something I’ve enjoyed throughout my career,” Lowe said. “It’s great to work with a local company like ZTERS that cares so much for their employees and customers and to help them reach their potential.”

With his extensive executive leadership experience in the waste management field, Lowe will spearhead the company’s growth in one of the largest waste markets in the United States. He has spent much of his career in the southeast and is a graduate of Louisiana State University.

ZTERS has invested in a fleet of roll-off dumpster delivery trucks, temporary fencing, storage containers, and other jobsite service rental products. Lowe’s appointment launches a new phase of growth, where the company’s top-tier service will continue to be the cornerstone of market development.

New NW Houston Headquarters for ZTERS Site Solutions

A 27,000-square-foot campus will meet the needs of rapid expansion

HOUSTON, September 24, 2020 – When Jon Farley launched ZTERS Site Solutions in 2009, he brought decades of waste industry experience to the table, and he knew he could improve the customer experience. He also knew he could build a company that would provide jobs and grow over time. Ten years later, the family-run company has opened a new 14,000-square-foot headquarters which will anchor its corporate campus in northwest Houston. The campus includes a second 6,000-square-foot office building and a 7,000-square-foot fitness studio.

“We have a strong presence in our neighborhood,” Farley says of the campus. “We provide well-paid jobs with a full range of benefits not only to local people, but we’re attracting new people to the area.”

ZTERS was named a Houston Chronicle Best Workplace in 2019 and is up for the award again in 2020. The company’s growth also landed it on the Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Companies list for the second year running in 2020.

“ZTERS has grown tremendously over the last 10 years, selling services the way our customers want to buy them, and the trend towards online purchasing continues to accelerate. ZTERS is still a small fish in a very big ocean, but we continue to innovate and excel with the tools and services we provide our customers and vendors,” Farley says.

The company reached another milestone this year – employee number 100 was hired. Employees went remote during the pandemic, with most employees still working from home as of September 2020. When the pandemic struck, ZTERS invested in telecommunications technology to keep people employed and to continue business operations throughout the COVID-19 shutdowns.

The new headquarters is built, but it may be a while before all employees are back in the office. In the meantime, operations continue remotely, and the new fitness center is available for use (with proper social distancing and following all health and safety guidelines). However, growth has been strong, even in 2020, and the new building will enable more employees to come on board.

ZTERS makes second appearance on Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Private Companies list

ZTERS Ranks No. 3925 on the 2020 Inc. 5000 with a Three-Year Revenue Growth of 90 Percent

HOUSTON, August 19, 2020 – For the second year running, Inc. magazine has named ZTERS to its annual Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in the United States. The family-owned company is completing a new headquarters in Cypress, Texas to accommodate the company’s rapid growth. Despite the challenges faced in 2020, ZTERS has continued to add staff and expand service nationwide.

“I knew for certain there was a need for a company that really put the customer first. I also knew we would be a minnow in a huge ocean in terms of market size. It gave us, as a startup, lots of room to grow,” said CEO Jon Farley.

The Inc. 5000 list represents a unique look at the most successful companies within the American economy’s most dynamic segment—its independent small businesses.

“We have grown a lot and learned a lot in the last 10 years, but our goal is still the same: To provide the best customer service in the industry and the most inclusive set of services to meet the customer’s needs,” Farley said.

Complete results of the Inc. 5000, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, can be found at www.inc.com/inc5000. The top 500 companies are also being featured in the September issue of Inc., available on newsstands August 18.

“The companies on this year’s Inc. 5000 come from nearly every realm of business,” says Inc. editor-in-chief Scott Omelianuk. “From health and software to media and hospitality, the 2020 list proves that no matter the sector, incredible growth is based on the foundations of tenacity and opportunism.”

ZTERS COMMERCIAL WASTE OFFERS COMPOLOGY CAMERA SYSTEMS TO ADJUST WASTE SERVICE

New technology helps companies right-size their waste and recycling streams.

Houston, Texas, April 24, 2020 – To keep pace with recent changes in commercial building usage due to COVID-19, the commercial waste division of ZTERS Waste Solutions began offering Compology camera systems in their dumpsters to help companies adapt their waste pickup schedules and become more efficient.

“We found many property owners and facility managers were either adjusting to empty office buildings and strip malls, and they needed to reduce their pickup levels. Or they were dealing with increased waste production, such as in multifamily apartment buildings and condos where more waste is being produced. Compology cameras help us right-size their waste service,” says Dan Studer, Commercial Waste Division Manager at ZTERS.

A major issue over the last couple of months has been finding the right service schedule to meet changing waste volumes. It is not always easy for owners and managers to measure waste output, and that leads to either too many or too few pickups—and overpaying for waste service.

Compology cameras are the latest technology in waste management. Cameras provide more than a view into dumpster levels; they also provide data to help determine how waste volume is changing and what pickup schedules would be most efficient.

“This system helps us provide better service to our customers and saves them money at a time when many businesses are working hard to adjust to circumstances,” Studer says.

The ZTERS commercial waste division works with retail, warehouse, industrial and multifamily properties nationwide to provide reliable, competitive waste and recycling services. For more information on how property owners and facility managers are adapting their waste pickups during the shutdown, contact Dan Studer at ZTERS.

Survey: How is COVID-19 affecting site services?

Over the last week we’ve reached out to our vendors to find out what they’re seeing on the ground. Specifically, how is COVID-19 affecting site services in the construction, events, and waste industries? Will hand washing supplies last through the crisis? With vendors in 35 states responding to our survey, here’s what we’ve discovered.

Like much of the country (and the world), most vendors viewed toilet paper and hand sanitizer stock issues as a top concern. About 40% of vendors said they expect to run out of one or both at some point before the COVID-19 crisis is over.

Anecdotally, we have heard from one vendor that hand sanitizer is being stolen from porta potties at an “alarming rate.” Because this has become such a major problem, the vendor had to begin charging restocking fees of $30 plus a $60 trip fee for each time they need to come out and replace hand sanitizer. Vendors, just like the general public, have limited supply and have asked customers to keep an eye on supplies to avoid theft.

Despite concerns over stock issues, most vendors reported feeling prepared for the situation. Less than 10% of vendors stated they felt unprepared. In addition, less than 10% of vendors said they expected layoffs. Another 15-20% reported being unsure whether or not layoffs would be expected as the situation goes on.

Across product lines, portable toilet vendors reported the highest likelihood of service delays. Roughly 24% of portable toilet vendors expect some service delays of some sort, and of course they are also the group experiencing stock supply concerns.

Only 15% of roll-off dumpster vendors anticipated service delays, with most responding they expect to see little to no impact from COVID-19. Front-load dumpster vendors responded similarly with only 11% expecting to see service delays. Storage container vendors seemed to meet in the middle at 13% expecting to experience delays.

While these numbers are low, there could be pockets of the country where delays and higher pricing due to demand are possible. Our account managers have been talking with vendors across the country to get a sense of where delivery times may be longer. We’re also keeping an eye out for vendors in neighboring cities where additional products such as hand-washing stations, for example, might be called in to fill rental orders.

To that end, three states stood out as being the most concerned about potential long-term impact. Vendors in Ohio, Oklahoma, and New York seemed particularly concerned about COVID-19 affecting site services, and we’ll continue to monitor those areas to find out what’s happening and what can be done.

In one case of short supply vs. demand, we were given a quote of $50,000 for a restroom trailer! Needless to say, we helped the customer find another solution. (And in fairness, that may have been a glitch from a vendor’s pricing system.) No matter what comes our way, our account managers are staying on the ball to find solutions that work for everyone.

With changes related to COVID-19 happening so quickly, we’re committed to staying in constant contact with our vendor partners and our customers to make sure we’re adjusting to meet the needs of everyone on the ground.

We’ve had the opportunity to build relationships with thousands of companies nationwide, so we’re working with them to make sure you can still seamlessly order, schedule, and manage your products and services.

Current customers can continue using myZTERS.com to manage their accounts. And to protect the safety of our account managers, we upgraded our technology so they can continue working from home.

Things will continue to change in the coming weeks and months. This is just a quick snapshot of COVID-19 affecting site services. We will continue to monitor the situation, and we’ll be here to answer any questions and help you keep your jobsites working. Have questions? Reach out to your account manager or contact us here.

Top 5 ZTERS Waste Posts of 2019

As 2020 rises on the horizon, let’s take a look back at the top five ZTERS Waste Solutions blog posts of 2019. Perhaps not surprisingly, our Ask Angela columns were some of the most viewed pages. Do you have waste solution questions? Reach out through our Facebook or LinkedIn pages and ask your most pressing question!

#5 (tie): Temporary Fence Rentals

Number five on the list was a tie, but both posts were about temporary fence rentals. Lots of people were interested in their fencing rental options in 2019.

Ask Angela: Do I really need temporary fencing on my construction worksite?

#4: Commercial Waste Service

Did you know ZTERS has a commercial waste division that services facilities like warehouses, retail, restaurants, multifamily, and industrial spaces? We had a fair number of site visitors looking for commercial waste solutions. If you manage a real estate portfolio, we have custom solutions to streamline your waste and recycling.

#3: Dumpster Rental Fees

Not surprisingly, we had a lot of interest in our post on hidden fees. So many customers call us because they got hit with tons of extra fees when they booked dumpsters with other companies. Our pricing is always upfront, and we won’t stick you with hidden fees.

#2: The ZTERS + PlanGrid Integration

Considering we only launched this integration in November, it’s incredible we had so many visits to the post announcing this new tool. PlanGrid is the number one project management software for construction professionals, and our new integration means they can order temporary service rentals right from their dashboard. If you’re a PlanGrid user, you need to check it out!

Planning an outdoor wedding: Here are your toilet options

With so many outdoor weddings hosted each year, it’s probably not surprising that our number one blog post (by a lot!) was our post on wedding toilet options. If you’ve got a wedding or outdoor event coming up in 2020, call us to schedule your portable toilets. We also help with dumpsters, temporary fencing, and storage containers if you need those services.

ZTERS 2019 celebration

ZTERS 2019: A year of celebration

This year marked the ZTERS ten-year anniversary, and it was a year of firsts for our company. We launched new tools. We won a couple of awards. And we are extremely grateful for all our staff, customers, and vendors who made 2019 such an eventful year. Here’s a recap of some of the ZTERS highlights for 2019.

The year started with the launch of myZTERS.com, our custom-built customer portal that streamlined online account management. We spent a lot of time listening to customers’ feedback and building this portal, and we continue to work on features to make your account management easier.

We also launched the ZTERS Fencing Calculator. This tool is a faster, more accurate way to estimate the amount of temporary fencing you’ll need for your jobs. Use it to plan out your fencing, then contact us for a rental quote. It’s that easy!

One last way we made rentals easier this year: the new ZTERS integration for PlanGrid project management software. We created this tool so PlanGrid users can quickly and easily get quotes for all their temporary services through their reports dashboard.

This year wasn’t just about new tools, though. We were honored to be named a 2019 Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Private Company. And to round out the year, our awesome Zeeps were surveyed by the Houston Chronicle and we were named one of the Houston Chronicle Top Workplaces 2019.

It has been an incredible year and an incredible decade. We look forward to being your waste partners for the next ten years and beyond. Thank you for being part of our growth!

The Houston Chronicle names ZTERS a winner of the Houston Top Workplaces 2019 Award

Houston, Texas, December 2, 2019 – ZTERS Site Services has been awarded a Top Workplaces 2019 honor by The Houston Chronicle. The list is based solely on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by research partner Energage, LLC, a leading provider of technology-based employee engagement tools. The anonymous survey measures several aspects of workplace culture, including alignment, execution, and connection, just to name a few.

“The Top Workplaces award is about much more than recognition and celebration,” said Eric Rubino, CEO of Energage. “Our research also shows that these organizations achieve higher referral rates, lower employee turnover, and double the employee engagement levels. It just goes to show that being intentional about culture delivers bottom-line results.”

The award caps a banner year for the company, which was also named a 2019 Inc. 5,000 Fastest-Growing Company. The family-owned company is building a new headquarters in Cypress, Texas to keep up with company growth.

“Many of our people have been with us every step of the way and the company’s personality is and always will be a reflection of the people who work here,” said Jon Farley, ZTERS CEO. “Every person here cares about each other, about our customers, and about our vendors. I firmly believe we have the best people in the industry and our success is a direct result of their hard work and commitment.”
