Renting a storage container can be an efficient and secure way to store tools, equipment, or personal belongings during a home renovation or construction project. But before you pack everything away, it’s important to understand what can and can’t go in a storage container.

At ZTERS, we offer reliable storage container rentals for residential and commercial use. Part of ensuring that your rental goes smoothly is making sure that you’re storing items safely and responsibly.

What You Can Store in a Storage Container

ZTERS storage containers are ideal for a wide range of items, including:

  • Household goods like furniture, clothing, and dishware during a move or remodel
  • Business inventory or files
  • Construction tools and materials
  • Power equipment (with fluids drained)

These steel containers are weather-resistant and can be securely locked, making them a popular choice for job sites and temporary storage needs. Learn more about finding the right storage container solutions here.

What You Should NOT Store in a Storage Container

While many items are allowed, there are some restrictions for safety, legal, and liability reasons. Here are common examples of what can’t go in a storage container:

1. Flammable or Combustible Materials

Items like gasoline, propane, kerosene, lighter fluid, and paint thinners are highly flammable and pose a serious fire risk. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, improper storage of combustible materials is a common cause of fires anywhere including construction sites, homes, and in temporary storage areas.

2. Toxic Chemicals or Hazardous Waste

This includes pesticides, asbestos, industrial solvents, and cleaning agents that could leak or cause harmful fumes. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides detailed guidelines on hazardous waste storage that do not align with general-use storage containers.

3. Explosives or Ammunition

Firearms, ammunition, fireworks, and other explosive items are prohibited. These items require specific storage conditions and should never be kept in a rented storage container.

4. Perishable Goods

Food items, especially those that require refrigeration, can spoil and attract pests. This is also a surefire way to add unnecessary moisture in your storage container. Storage containers are not climate-controlled, so even sealed or canned goods should be avoided.

5. Motorized Vehicles

Cars, motorcycles, ATVs, and other motorized vehicles are not permitted inside our containers. Even if they are drained of fuel, these items pose risks related to fumes, weight distribution, and insurance restrictions.

6. Illegal or Stolen Property

It goes without saying, but storage containers may not be used for storing illegal drugs, stolen goods, or any other contraband. Law enforcement can investigate if there is reasonable suspicion.

7. Irreplaceable or High-Value Items

We recommend not storing cash, collectibles, family heirlooms, or other items you can’t replace. While our containers are secure, these valuables are better kept in a safe deposit box or secure indoor facility.

Why These Storage Container Rules Matter

These restrictions exist to protect you, your property, and anyone accessing or working around the container. Storing hazardous or prohibited items could result in accidents, legal liability, or damage to the container itself. If you’re unsure about a particular item, always check with your ZTERS account manager.
