For those seeking a mesmerizing outdoor experience set in a cool desert landscape, the 2023 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta promises just that and more. This year, from October 7–15, hundreds of vibrant balloons will dot the New Mexico sky from the early morning to evening.

Dating back to 1972, it’s the largest ballooning event in the world!

The event may be known by several names—New Mexico Hot Air Balloon Festival and Albuquerque Balloon Festival among them—but it all refers to one spectacular nine-day celebration. There are certain sights that are impossible to forget and the balloon fiesta is bound to be one of them.

Take a look at the official website for a comprehensive look at the 2023 festival, accommodation options, maps, FAQs, and more.

What to Expect from the 2023 Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta

While the dozens of stunning hot air balloons is the main draw for the festival, there are tons of other amazing events. From fireworks shows to chainsaw carving to drone light shows and even skydiving, there’s no shortage of entertainment.

The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta takes immersive and interactive to a whole new level. Guests can (carefully) wander around the Balloon Fiesta Park and chat with the pilots. They’re also invited to learn more about ballooning at the Balloon Discovery Center. There’s an abundance of educational opportunities and hands-on activities.

With so many breath-taking views, it’s hard to crown just one event. But the most renowned display has to be the Mass Ascension, during which all of the participating balloons launch in two waves. The launches take place over the course of nearly two hours at around 7:00am on select days. During one of these Mass Ascensions, representatives of different countries will fly their nation’s flag from their balloon in what’s called the Flight of the Nations.

The ultimate question on a lot of people’s minds is can I ride in a hot air balloon?! The answer is yes! You can do so by reserving a spot through Rainbow Ryders. The unforgettable trip will end with a celebratory toast, flight certificate, and commemorative pin.

Can’t make it to Albuquerque? Not to worry! The Balloon Festival is livestreamed so that you can enjoy it from anywhere. You can even view hours of footage from previous years to get a taste for what’s in store.
