What is the EPA’s National Recycling Strategy?

Everyone has heard the saying: “reduce, reuse, recycle,” but how can commercial property managers implement these ideas in their properties? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has created a National Recycling Strategy to help individuals and organizations transition to a circular economy based on the “reduce, reuse, recycle” principle. What does this mean for facilities? Here’s what you need to know.

What is the National Recycling Strategy?

According to the EPA’s website, the National Recycling Strategy is committed to “enhancing and advancing the national municipal solid waste (MSW) recycling system.” It is part one of a series dedicated to building a circular economy – a different way of managing waste – for all. The goal is to identify activities that encourage people to use “the three R’s” to reduce the impact on local landfills.

What is a circular economy?

A circular economy has a few different elements. It involves designing and producing goods that maintain their value as long as possible. It also focuses on recycling and reusing products wherever possible and producing them in the most environmentally friendly way. A main goal of a circular economy is to reduce the overall rate of waste production and advocate for more sustainable business models.

Does the National Recycling Strategy affect commercial properties?

Commercial properties produce a varied waste stream, and often there aren’t systems in place for recycling and reuse. The National Recycling Strategy aims to educate people on the finer points of the recycling process, including which materials can be recycled and the best methods for disposing of these items. So, in that way, yes, the strategy can help commercial properties provide guidance on what to recycle and how to improve recycling and reuse at your facilities.

How can facilities get involved?

To improve recycling efforts, start by looking at your waste stream and identifying ways to recycle or reuse. A waste analysis is a good way to get a handle on what you’re throwing out and what can be repurposed. Our team can help with waste stream analysis and help you identify the types of recyclables produced and how to properly reuse or recycle them.

We can also right-size your waste service, so it’s uniquely tailored to fit your needs and boost the sustainability profile of your commercial property. This is a first step toward helping you achieve your sustainability goals.  For more information about our commercial waste services, give us a call! We’re here to help you better manage your waste.
