Porta Potty Size Guide

Porta potties, portable toilets, porta johns — no matter what you call them, portable toilets are an essential addition to any job-site or event. In some cases, they’re not just nice to have, they’re required under OSHA law. 

With a variety of portable toilet options available, you may be curious about standard dimensions. While porta potty dimensions may vary slightly by manufacturer, the different types of porta potties (standard, ADA compliant, deluxe, etc.) are generally the same across the board.

In this porta potty size guide, we’ll walk you through the different sizes of porta potties so that you can make an informed rental decision. 

How Porta Potty Dimensions are Measured

The key measurements that come into play when calculating porta potty size are:

• Height (exterior)
• Width (side-to-side)
• Depth (front-to-back)

Other measurements involve the interior space like distance between the toilet seat and the door as well as the waste tank capacity, which refers to the volume of waste the unit can hold before it requires servicing. Tank capacities can vary significantly, with standard units holding anywhere from 50 to 70 gallons of waste.

Standard Porta Potty Size

Standard portable toilets are typically 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet tall. More specifically, standard porta potties measure 4 feet wide, 7 feet 4 inches tall, and 3 feet 8 inches deep.

The interiors of standard portable toilets are pretty basic, including at minimum a chemical toilet and toilet paper. You can also expect ventilation and a locking mechanism. Interior features may also include seat covers, mirrors, a urinal, or running water (if hookup is available).

A step-up from the standard porta potty, a flushable porta potty with a sink may be slightly larger to accommodate for the additional features. These porta potties more closely mirror a traditional bathroom, making them a good option for longer-term projects.

ADA Compliant Porta Potty Size

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant portable toilets provide additional space to accommodate wheelchairs and similarly sized mobility devices. ADA porta potties often measure 7 feet 2 inches wide, 7 feet 6 inches tall, and 5 feet 7 inches deep.

Because of their roomier interior, ADA compliant portable toilets are a popular choice for weddings and large events. They’re an essential component of inclusive event planning.

Restroom Trailer Size

We often recommend luxury portable toilet trailers for more formal outdoor events. They bring a more polished interior and have convenient features like running water and flushing toilets. Size varies greatly however, most restroom trailers measure around 8 feet 7 inches tall and 8 feet deep.

Luxury portable toilet trailers are available with multiple stalls (up to 10 in one trailer). Width will depend on the number of stalls. These restroom trailers also include mirrors, full-sized sinks, and countertops.
